­Cell phone ownership among children has increased 68% in the past five years, according to MRI’s recently-released American Kids Study. Wi-Fi handset shipments have exploded over the past year, and will continue to show strong growth over the next several years. With the increasing prevalence of Wi-Fi enabled handsets, hotspot usage by handheld devices has increased significantly. As a percentage of total connects, handhelds increased from 20% in 2008 to 35% in 2009. A timely study in journal Human Factors suggestes why texting while drivign is riskier than talking on a cell phone or with another passenger. Human factors researchers found that texters in a driving simulator had more crashes, responded more slowly to brake lights on cars infornt of them, and showed impairment in forward and lateral control than did drivers who talked on a cell phone while driving or drove without texting.
